Cheating by impersonation and identity theft is a serious cyber offence. A complaint was received from one lady resident of Zarkawt, Aizawl stating that her son’s photo and username were used in Instagram by an unknown person for allegedly collecting donations for Burmese refugees in Mizoram. Cyber Crime PS ( CCPS) Case No.83/22 Dated 29.08.2022 u/s 66C/66D of IT Act, 2000 was registered.
The investigation did not prove to be an easy task for our cyber sleuths as the SIM card of the phone number mentioned in the FIR was no longer active and there was no call record available. However, after meticulous and thorough investigation, one suspect was identified to be the user of a similar handset bearing the same IMEI. On interrogation of the suspect, it was established that S.Malsawmdawngzuala (27) of College Veng, Siaha, was the perpetrator, who had created the fake Instagram account of the victim using Instagram user name and photo.
Thus, based on the new reliable leads revealed during the investigation, a team of #CCPS proceeded to Siaha on 12.5.2023 and arrested the accused person. Further investigation is in progress. Well done Team #CCPS. Excellent detection.
