The entire areas of Mamit District earlier been a Civil Sub-Division of undivided Aizawl District has become a full fledged District on 11th March, 1998 vide order No. A.6001/21/95-GAD and consequently Pu L.T. Hrangchal MPS the first SP of Mamit District started his office on 27.4.1998.

     The district covers an area of 3025.75 sq. kms. of land. It has got about 50 kms of International boundary with Bangladesh and about 70 kms and 45 kms Inter-state boundaries with Tripura and Assam respectively. It has as many as 70 villages within this district with a population of 85757. Out of which 44,567 are males and 41,190 are females as per 2011 census. The literacy rate is 85.96 % and sex ratio is 924/1000. The district capital Mamit is 102 kms from the State capital Aizawl. The means of communication are cars and maxi caps. The population is a mix of Christians (84.3%) who constitute the majority followed by the Buddhist (4%) and the Muslim (1.8%). The language by majority of the population is Mizos.

The organizational set up of Mamit DEF is as under:-

      1. SP Office: There are 8 (eight) branches under SP Mamit office under the supervision of one each of Addl. SP and SP

  1. Reserve Branch: This branch is manned by 1 (one) Inspector (RO), 1 (one) SI as 2nd RO and 15 constables. This branch deals with all service matter of DEF personnel i.e. Leave, Discipline of force, transfer and posting, accommodation and other important correspondence of the District.
  1. Account Branch : This branch is manned by 1 (one) Inspector (M), 3 (three) SI(M), 3 (three) ASI(M), 2 (two) constables and 1 (one) IV Grade which deals service matter of ministerial staff, pension papers, pay and allowances of DEF personnel, other correspondences and TA/DA etc.
  1. Crime Branch: This branch is manned by one Sub-Inspector known as Reader Sub-Inspector and 3 (three) constables. It deals with all the matter relating to crime within District. Total cases registered during the year 2010 – 121 cases, 2011 – 123 cases, 2012 (Oct) – 100 cases.
  1. MT Branch: This branch is manned by 1 (one) Head Constable known as MTO, 10 (ten) constables and 7 (seven) drivers. This branch deals with motor transport and mobility of the district.
  1. Confidential BranchThis Branch is look after by one Grade III Stenographer and 3 (three) constables. It deals all confidential matters and assists SP in his day to day functioning etc.
  1. District Police  Store: This Branch is manned by Head Constable known as i/c Clothing and 2 (two) constables. This branch deals with clothing items of DEF and other departmental store.
  1. Prosecution Branch: This Branch is established in 12th.April.2011 which deals with all Police cases for submission to Magistrate, Mamit for prosecution of the case. This branch is manned by 1 (one) Inspector as Prosecuting Inspector (PI) and one Head Constable and 2 (two) constables. This branch is situated at District Court, Mamit.
  1. Traffic Branch: This Brnach is established since 15th.Feb.2011 which deals with all the traffic related matters within Mamit towns. Presently one ASI and 4 (four) constables are posted in this branch. In 2011, Traffic compounding money amounting to `45,200/- are collected from traffic violators. In 2012 till September `17,600/- is collected from traffic violators.


  1. Mamit Sub-Division: Office of the Sub-Division is manned by one Dy. SP as SDPO, one ASI as Reader, 2 (two) constables. The Sub-Division looks after Mamit Police Station.
  1. Mamit Police Station : Mamit PS was established in the year 10th March,1972 and was under the jurisdiction of Aizawl DEF and under the supervision of SDPO Mamit Sub-Division. In the year 27th April, 2998, it was no longer under the jurisdiction of Aizawl DEF and began to function under Mamit DEF with the supervision of Superintendent of Police, Mamit District, Mamit. Since its inception, there are 25 Officers designated as Officer-in-Charge, Mamit Police Station. Generally 35-40 cases on average are registered every year. This Police Station covers 10 (ten) villages and 3 (three) sub-villages.

     2) Kawrthah Sub-Division : The office of SDPO Kawrthah is manned by one Dy. SP known as SDPO, 1 (one) ASI, 4 (four) constables.


            The Sub-Division looks after the following Police Station and Out Post.

          (a) Kawrthah Police Station : Kawrthah Police Station is located at 47 kms North-West to the District headquarters, Mamit. It was opened in the year 1974 on 10th.March. The first Officer-in-Charge of this PS was SI Sanghnuna Royte. So far, 15 OC’s have been posted in this PS including the present (Nov 2012) incumbent SI C.Lalchhuanawma. There are 14 (fourteen) villages under this PS. Generally 15-25 cases on average are registered every year.

          (b) Kanhmun Police Station : Kanhmun Police Station is located at the Mizoram-Tripura State border. It was opened in the year 1986 on 20th February. As per the available record, the Kanhmun PS complex area is 3677.50 sq.m. Boundaries on the south by ZBKT main road, on the east by PWD complex, on the north and west streams by streams separating the plot from the adjacent private settlements. Initially, PWD complex with the building was occupied for Police Station. In the year 1990, Assam Type Building was constructed for police and it was occupied in the same year. In the year 2008, the said PS Assam Type Building was dismantled and a new RCC two storey building was constructed under Police Modernisation Scheme which was completed in the same year and thus occupied on dt. 9.5.2009. The first Officer-in-Charge of this PS was SI KB Deka (20.2.1986 – 18.1.1987) so far 19 OCs have been posted in this PS including the present incumbent SI Zoramsanga Sailo (2.1.2012 – till date). Generally 20 – 30 cases on average are registered every year. It has one Police Out Post at Zawlnuam. There are 10 villages under this Police Station.

            (c) Zawlnuam Out Post : Zawlnuam Out Post was opened in the year 1980 on 1st.January. The area is 6.98 bighas. Boundary on the south by Lalhera’s garden on the East by Borai river on the North by Mitinkhuma’s plot and West by Pu Lalhminga Fish Pond separating the plot from the adjacent private settlement. Initially one Assam Type PWD Building was occupied for the Police Out Post which was now dismantled. In 2001, the presently occupied building as the out post building was constructed in the present new location. The first Officer-in-Charge of this Out Post was ASI PL Hmingthanga, so far 25 OCs have been posted in this Out Post including the present incumbent SI Zoramsanga. There are 6 (six) villages under this Out Post.

          3. West Phaileng Sub-Division: As per Govt. of Mizoram Home Department notification No. A.22022/2/2005-HMP, SDPO West Phaileng was carved out from SDPO Mamit. SDPO West Phaileng office is located at a distance of 43 kms south from Headquarters Mamit. At present the office is attached inside the PS building on the adjacent side of the OC’s room. Around 35 – 40 cases has been registered each year. There are two Police Stations under this Sub-Division.


         (a) West Phaileng Police Station: West Phaileng PS is located at a distance of 43 kms south from Headquarters Mamit. West Phaileng Out Post was under induction w.e.f. 8.7.1988 with the first I/C KC Ruata (L). The Out Post was upgraded to Police Station on 1.10.1992 under the first OC SI R.F. Zuava. There were 20 Officer-in-Charge till date since the Out Post was inducted, including the present
OC SI Dhian Singh Minhas.

            Initially one private building was occupied as Out Post building and later some Police quarters were constructed at Bethlehem Veng, West Phaileng. Hence, the Out Post was shifted at one of the building at Bethlehem Veng, West Phaileng. The present PS building was occupied in the first quarter of 2008 when the construction under Police Department was completed. There are 29 villages under the Police Station.

                   (b) Mapara Police Station: Located at Mizoram-Bangladesh border, 120 kms away from Mamit. It was established on 26.2.1974 and 24 Officer-in-Charge has been posted in this PS including present OC SI Laldingliana. There are 9 (nine) villages under this PS.

                 3. CRIME SITUATION : Though this district is surrounded by International boundary with Bangladesh and Inter-State boundaries with Tripura and Assam. The Crime rate reported is not so high. Crime registered in the past 3 (three) years are 2010 – 121 cases, 2011 – 123 cases, 2012 (Oct) – 100 cases. The major crimes are theft, burglary, hurt and MLTP related cases.

               4. ACCOMODATION : Though there are some new buildings coming up at the districts Headquarters Mamit after the inception of new District, accommodation for staff is still very insufficient. All the building/quarters constructed during 70’s and 80’s are more or less damages and required major repairs or dismantled.  








KAWRTHAH P.S. CASE NO. 19/2017 dt.1410.2017 u/s302IPC


 On  14.10.2017  an  enquiry report was  submitted by  ASI  Vanhmingthangi of  kawrthahps stating on 14.10.2017 at around  11;40 AM telephonic information was received from  VCP Tumpanglui that he was  informed by one  labourer of katol Bari Village, Tripura that two dead bodies were  found inside  the farm of Hmingchungnunga at the outskirt of Kawrthah.

Accordingly she with her party rushed to the place of occurance, inside the farm house two dead bodies , man  and  woman were lying on the floor and  as  identified by the niece of dead woman Zaihlunpuii, they were Hmingchungnunga and his wife Rozikpuii, Inquest was carefully conducted over the dead bodies. From the enquiry,foul play was  suspected and it was  found that  the death of Hmingchungnunga and  Rozikpuii was  homicidal and  requested to register a  criminal  case. Accordingly, Kawrthah PS Case No.19/2017 dt.14.10.2017 u/s IPC was registered and SI H.Lalengliana took up investigation of the case.


            The information  was received  on 14.10.2017 @11;40Am at kawrthah  PS and SDPO, Kawrthah and  Kawrthah PS staff  immediately gave utmost effort for  the detection of the unknown perpetrator.All possible measures were taken  and as such the accused was successfully detected within 2 (two) days and arrested on 16.10.2017 at 11:50PM.


            Thorough search of the PO and surrounding areas leading to  recovery of  vital evidence,i,e, blood stained shirt(T-shirt) which belong to  the  accused approximately at 500 meters away from the PO.

            Immediate and effective protection of  crime scence.This ensured that graphic image of  victims were not leaked to the public thereby reducing threat of law and order problem and facilitating smooth investigation.

            Thorough and  tactful interrogation  of suspect leading to  admission of guilt by the accused andleading recovery of evidences.



            The case investigation is almost  completed and pending for waiting FSL report,PME report and Confession Statement of accused.
