Such criminal and repugnant acts can put the health of many in danger. On 26.4.2023, a written FIR was received from SDO PHED, Lunglei stating that on 26/4/2023 @ 9:00AM, PHE personnel on duty at Pialthleng Pump House saw a number of dead Crabs and Prawns etc. at Tlawng river, which is the main source of water supply to Lunglei town. It was apparent that Tlawng river was intentionally contaminated by using some kind of poisonous substance and pumping of water had to be stopped. Hence, Lunglei PS C/No. 84/23 Dt. 26/4/2023 u/s 429/277 IPC r/w Sec. 24 (6) of The Mizoram Forest Act r/w Sec 43 r/w 24 (1)(a) of The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act was registered. The matter was promptly investigated and pursuant to diligent follow up, three suspects who were seen at the scene of crime driving a Maruti Suzuki Eeco bearing R/No. MZ02 C1368 : 1). Lalawmpuia (43) s/o Thunrai, College Veng, Lunglei, 2). Lalfakawma (26) s/o Lalrinhlua of College Veng, Lunglei) and 3). Lalmuankima (32) s/o Tangkarai of Rahsi Veng, Lunglei were arrested. On sustained interrogation, they confessed to the crime and sent to judicial custody. The poisonous substance used for contaminating the river is found to be ‘Record’ (Cypermethrin 10%). Further investigation is in progress.
